WHAT IS AN ARBORETUM?

A living collection of trees and shrubs cultivated and labeled for educational and scientific purposes.

See our latest training video to our associations on how trees play an important environmental role in their communities.

TREES PROVIDE MANY BENEFITS:

  • ECONOMIC

Mature trees in yards and along neighborhood streets increase the value of residential properties by 5-15%.

  • High quality landscaping increases commercial property rental rates.

  • Shoppers spend more money in shopping areas with mature trees.

  • Trees significantly reduce air conditioning costs in the summer.

  • Trees act as windbreaks, reducing heating costs in the winter.

  • The trees in the Ghertner & Company Arboretum have been valued at over $400,000.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

  • Trees improve air quality. Their leaves act as giant air filters.

  • Trees reduce the amount of noise pollution.

  • Trees provide beauty and a sense of tranquility. Studies have shown a measurable reduction in stress by walking or sitting amongst trees or from seeing a tree outside one’s window.

COMMUNITY BENEFITS

  • Trees reduce the amount of polluted stormwater runoff and flooding by absorbing rainwater and filtering pollutants.

  • Trees provide important food and shelter to wildlife. By focusing on trees that are native to Tennessee and eliminating the use of pesticides, the Ghertner & Company Arboretum is providing healthy habitat for many different native species of wildlife. We have observed over 80 different species of birds and pollinators, including the threatened Monarch butterfly and the American bumblebee.
