Our latest Director’s Edge Training session tackled a topic every Middle Tennessee community association should understand: stormwater control.
We were glad to welcome Gretchen Judkins of Nashville Metro Stormwater, who spoke to our Board Members and Managers about how stormwater control mechanisms work and what associations are responsible for.
What We Covered
What stormwater control measures are. Ponds, basins, and other features manage runoff, reduce flooding, and protect local waterways. Many communities have them without realizing the association is responsible for them.
The different types. Gretchen walked through the common kinds of stormwater control measures found in neighborhoods and condo communities, and how each one functions.
Required inspections. Board members learned which inspections are required and why staying current matters for compliance.
Required maintenance. Regular upkeep keeps these systems working properly, protects property values, and helps associations avoid costly repairs and potential penalties.
Why This Matters for Your Association
Stormwater features are easy to overlook until something goes wrong. Boards that understand their responsibilities can budget for maintenance, schedule inspections on time, and keep their community protected. If you’re not sure what stormwater features your community has, or what is required of your board, that’s a good place to start.
